Loved Back to Life: How Mentoring, Purpose, and Opportunity Helped Samantha Build a New Future
When Samantha was still incarcerated, she overheard a conversation that would ultimately change the course of her life. A woman involved with Bridges Reentry was asking others if they would like a mentor when they returned home. The moment Samantha heard those words, she knew the program was for her.
More than three years later, Samantha's life tells the story of what can happen when women are given support, accountability, practical tools, and people who believe in them. Today, Samantha is rebuilding her family, excelling in college, earning a livable wage, and purchasing a home for herself and her children.
But none of it happened overnight.
A Mentor Who Became Family
After joining Bridges Reentry, Samantha was matched with her mentor, Nancy. What began as a mentoring relationship grew into something much deeper. "Nancy has become such a close friend, confidant, mom, aunt to me," Samantha shares. "I can't even put a title on how important she is in my life."
For women returning from incarceration, reentry can be overwhelming. Having someone in your corner—someone who believes in your potential and offers guidance through life's challenges—can make all the difference.
For Samantha, mentoring provided not only encouragement, but also accountability, stability, and hope.
Mapping a New Future
Through Bridges Reentry's Transition to Success (TTS) program, Samantha began participating in the Map of My Dreams process, a framework designed to help women identify goals, overcome barriers, and create a practical roadmap toward long-term success.
Working alongside her mentor and TTS coach, Pam, Samantha identified four goals that would shape her future:
Rebuild relationships with her family
Return to school
Secure a job with a livable wage
Purchase a home
Rather than focusing solely on immediate needs, The TTS process provided the framework and guidance for Samantha to envision the life she wanted to create and then break that vision into achievable steps.
Restoring Family Relationships
One of Samantha's most important goals was reconnecting with her children. Today, those relationships are thriving.
Her oldest daughter recently graduated from high school, and Samantha is helping her prepare for her next chapter. Her son, who struggled when Samantha first returned home, has experienced a dramatic turnaround and is now excelling academically while participating in wrestling. Her youngest daughter is also thriving and is a member of the honor society.
For Samantha, these restored relationships represent far more than a personal achievement. They are evidence that healing and reconciliation are possible.
Education Opens New Doors
Through Bridges Reentry, Samantha received a full scholarship to Walden University.
She is now pursuing her education while maintaining a 4.0 GPA and earning recognition on the honor society.
Returning to school was once a distant dream. Today, it is another milestone on her journey toward self-sufficiency and long-term success.
Building Economic Stability
Like many women returning from incarceration, Samantha worried that her felony record would prevent her from finding meaningful employment.
"I didn't know if I could," she says.
Today, she proudly works for a second-chance employer, earning a livable wage and supporting her family.
Economic mobility is a critical component of successful reentry. Through employment opportunities, coaching, and support, Bridges Reentry helps women move beyond survival and build lasting financial stability.
Achieving the Dream of Homeownership
Perhaps the most visible symbol of Samantha's transformation is her newest accomplishment. Just before this interview, she went under contract on a home for herself and her children.
"I'm buying a house for me and my kids, and I'm very proud of where I'm at and all the hard work I've put in," she says.
For many families, homeownership represents security, stability, and a future filled with possibility. For Samantha, it is also a testament to perseverance and the power of having people who refuse to give up on you.
Loved Back to Life
When asked what Bridges Reentry has meant in her life, Samantha's answer says it all. "These women have basically loved me back to life."
She credits her mentor Nancy, TTS coach Pam, Executive Director Gay Romack, and the entire Bridges Reentry community for helping her believe in herself again. "They gave me a reason to believe in myself and the strength I needed to push through when I didn't know if I could make it."
Samantha's story is not simply about overcoming obstacles. It is about what becomes possible when women are equipped with the tools, relationships, and opportunities they need to thrive.
At Bridges Reentry, we believe every woman deserves a second chance and the opportunity to build a future filled with hope.
Samantha's story is proof that transformation is possible.
